Employees Shape the Future of Work

In the past, the success of a business has been linked to leadership and a top-down approach. However, the world we live in today is much different. A recent call to action from Ram Charan and Johnny C. Taylor. Jr., SHRM-SCP asks organizations to look at a bottom-up approach. Let employees lead businesses to success. Specifically, by finding levers of the business, use of technology for ongoing insights, coaching instead of bossing and communication. Below is a summary of highlights from their latest post. Find the Levers of the Business

Charan and Taylor recommend businesses ask employees to identify and prioritize the tasks that deliver financial results and ensure continuity of the business. On top of that, they recommend that businesses keep the employees involved in the how of it all. Give them a say in how the levers are built and stay flexible in the configuration.

Leverage Technology

Software exists to help HR assemble teams of the right people with the right managers. The specific technology needed varies, but Charan and Taylor recommend that businesses use the technology to gain insights about their employees. Artificial intelligence can be applied to keep records and measure employee productivity. It can also capture workers’ preferences and feedback and, by showing progress on tasks in real-time, reduce the need for bosses’ intervention.

Transform Middle Managers into Coaches

With software, agile thinking, and the use of project teams to get work done, managers are no longer needed as an added layer of bureaucracy. Instead, Charan and Taylor recommend business owners give more power to the employees. In a sense, business owners need to remove obstacles, facilitate imagination and inspire motivation. They recommend managers change their mindset to become more like coaches.

Communicate

Communication is the lifeblood of this new empowered employee framework. Charan and Taylor recommend that all communication is personalized and delivered through channels most used by employees. Once you understand and apply this framework, you will begin to solve many of today’s biggest workplace challenges. What do you think? How has your workplace changed?
